By approving equal financing of medical treatments regardless of where the treatment takes place, the Swiss parliament has opened the door to considerable potential savings in health care provision while maintaining or improving quality, not by changing reimbursement amounts, but by aligning stakeholder interests conducive to efficiency and cost savings.

By altering the financial incentive to conduct treatments in a specific place, it should be easier to redistribute health care delivery between different levels of the health provider system.  Thus, patients can be treated according to more efficient and cost-effective care delivery. Data-driven approaches show that health care coordination across different access points, including telemedicine and home care as examples, can improve health outcomes and save costs. Switzerland now has a big opportunity to invest in data-driven illumination of the most efficient distribution of health care to reap considerable cost savings and improve health across society.
